Am I going senile? Or….

Did our illustrious PM not firmly state last year and at the start of this year that he’d send no more troops to the ‘Stan?

Now I do know that most of the 450 won’t be ‘dedicated’ combat troops, but boots on the ground are boots on the ground. Watching the ABC news last night he also mentioned it becoming an unpopular war, so obviously there are more deployments being looked at.

His curt conclusion of the presentation also shows he’s not wanting to be questioned on these sort of matters. Very interesting. I also wonder if the time wa planned so it happened after ANZAC day so as to tap into the latent patriotism of the date?

He also said that he was fiscally responsible – the little rat

  2. Nautilus Says:

Yes you are senile, now what was the rest of the question?

  3. maggs Says:

    How does one judge senility?

  4. drej08 Says:

Hes as bad as Howard, whatever the yanks want, he’ll snivel and give it up.

  5. chazfh Says:

Lerm: he also says he doesn’t want to break election promises!

Naut: none of that lip young fella!

    Magg’s: Marcus Enfield?!!

Drej: Only because there’s a Democrat in the whitehouse..

“Did our illustrious PM not firmly state…” I can’t remember but it sounds like the sort of thing he would say.

Yea, I am watching that one too Chaz, seems I have a vested interest in any kind of army thing these days.
In the form of six foot four baby boy of mine being in the army.

Okay had a little search on the intermenet
On the 23rd March he said he would not commit to sending more troops
Earlier on that month he said that he’d had no ‘request’ for more troops
In February Fitzgibbon was downplaying any further troop deployments (and he’d only do that if Kev told him to do it).
Also i’m fairly certain that in the last 6 months of 2008 he kept harping on about not committing anymore troops.

All that is in the past and we’re commiting 450 troops. Punto

I’m sure it wasn’t a core promise. Prior art sez that’s completely fine.

  11. uamada Says:

Is he or the govt not allowed to change their mind or is the issue that he said it wouldn’t happen?

  12. yankeedog Says:

I’d rather NATO shoulder a bit more of that burden. And to be honest I’m not sure what good the equivalent of half a US battalion will do on the ground in Afghanistan. I’d rather Australia ‘backfilled’ for any commitments we (the US) had in the Pacific area.

  13. chazfh Says:

    DR Y LOL!
Uamada: mate it’s more the constant meme of ‘no more troops’ but then he suddenly rolls over, and then his sulleness when this is pointed out. Not very statesmanlike.

YD: NATO needs to get their hand out of their asses without a doubt. Alot of those who are there have crap ROE’s. As for us backfilling.. Our Armed forces are stretched as they are
